Modern dating struggle
Dating is probably one of the most fun and frustrating parts of life. So how did we go from arranged marriages to swiping right?
Other research indicates that current generations aren’t more sexually active than past generations, however the pervasiveness of hookup culture has made the dynamic of these relationships different.
For example, Lisa Wade, author of “American Hookup: The New Culture of Sex on Campus”, states that college students view sex and who they have sex with as two different things.
In her book, she interviews a student who stated the girl he liked wouldn’t have sex with him, but he knew she was consistently hooking up with other guys.
It wasn’t for lack of mutual attraction, she just carried the weight of intimacy with a guy she cared about more heavily than a meaningless hookup.
The combination of the sexual revolution, “hookup culture”, and the ease-of-access technology gives us with meeting potential partners, it may not be that dating relationships are less meaningful, but more that relationships are placed into two different categories: meaningful and meaningless.
