Dating your mg midget
A few years ago, I took on a basket-case Austin-Healey Sprite project.Because the Sprite was essentially the same car as the MG Midget and I needed just about everything for my car, I scoured Northern California self-service yards in search of Midget pieces.
This Midget is very rough, showing signs of long-term abandonment under a tree in a Bay Area back yard.
Still, plenty of pieces left on it, including just about everything from the engine compartment.
Starting with the 1974 model year, British Leyland reached into its parts bin and substituted the 1493cc engine out of the Triumph Spitfire for the BMC A engine that had been in the Spridget since the very beginning.
Thanks to tough American emission-control standards, the '76 Midget had just 55 horses under the bonnet.
The Midget is one of those classic cars that can be worth decent money in great shape but can be found for just about scrap prices in rough condition.
Once this car spent a quarter-century or so exposed to the elements, its date with The Crusher was set. When interviewed for a 1999 piece, performers engaged in ongoing "Midget Wrestling" events stated that they did not view the term "Midget Wrestling" as derogatory, but merely descriptive of their small size; however, others responding to the piece disagreed, with one stating that the performances themselves perpetuated an outdated and demeaning image. The term "midget" came into prominence in the mid-19th century after Harriet Beecher Stowe used it in her novels Sunny Memories of Foreign Lands and Old Town Folks where she described children and an extremely short man, respectively. In the early 19th century, however, midgets were romanticized by the middle class and regarded with the same affectionate condescension extended to children, as creatures of innocence. Midgets have always been popular entertainers, but were often regarded with disgust and revulsion in society. such as a midget cell, a midget crabapple, MG's Midget, Daihatsu's Midget, and the Midget Mustang airplane; or to anything that regularly uses anything that is smaller than normal (other than a person), such as midget car racing and quarter midget racing; or a smaller version of play or participation, such as midget golf; or to anything designed for very young (i.e., small) participants—in many cases children—such as Disneyland's Midget Autopia, Midget hockey, and Midget football.MG revived the Midget name on the rebodied 1961 Austin-Healey Sprite, though the Midget stood apart by dint of its vertical-bar MG-style grille, retained as shown here through 1969. The MG Midget had a heritage within the British automaker. The name disappeared after the last K3 model of 1934, but the T-Series were Midgets in spirit.By 1958, MG was under the British Motor Corporation roof with Austin-Healey and producing the original A-H Sprite at its Abingdon factory. The “bugeye” proved so successful, especially in the U.S., that BMC decided to restyle it for 1961 and sell it in a second version as a new Midget.MG Sports Cars Image Gallery Through 1971, the Sprite and Midget were built side-by-side as fraternal twins differing only in badges, grilles, and minor trim and equipment. Basic design stayed the same throughout these 19 years, though there were running changes to engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension, top mechanisms, trim, and equipment.
